Senator Chuck Grassley Hospitalized with Infection
Senator Chuck Grassley, the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, has been hospitalized in the Washington area with an infection. His office announced on Tuesday that the 90-year-old senator is currently receiving antibiotic infusions and will return to work as soon as possible following doctors’ orders. Despite his hospitalization, Grassley is said to be in good spirits. No further details about his condition have been provided.
A History of Good Health
Although Grassley underwent hip surgery last year and briefly used a scooter for mobility, he has generally been in good health. Known for his daily early morning runs, Grassley has maintained an active presence in Congress. In fact, he became the Senate’s only nonagenarian in September. Currently serving as the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, Grassley has been a senator since 1980.
A Long and Distinguished Career
Grassley’s political career began in 1956 when he was elected to the state Legislature at the age of 23. After serving 18 years at the Statehouse, he was elected to the U.S. House in 1974. Grassley became the oldest senator last fall following the death of Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, who was three months older than him. As the seniormost Republican, Grassley held the position of president pro tempore of the Senate until 2021 when Democrats took control. The president pro tempore is responsible for presiding over the chamber and is third in line for presidential succession.
