Options to Replace Chip Kelly at UCLA
Internal Options/Recent Assistants
USC defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn
D’Anton Lynn, the son of former Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn, has quickly risen in the coaching ranks. He dramatically improved UCLA’s defense as coordinator in 2023, leading the Bruins to impressive national rankings. Despite his recent move to rival USC, bringing Lynn back as head coach could change the mood quickly.
UCLA assistant head coach/safeties coach Brian Norwood
Brian Norwood, a veteran assistant with coordinator experience, has worked all over the country and would resonate well in the Bruins locker room. He has the personality to connect with players, donors, and other key external figures as UCLA navigates its transition.
Las Vegas Raiders running backs coach DeShaun Foster
DeShaun Foster, a record-setting running back with the Bruins, spent the past seven years coaching UCLA’s running backs. He has notable ties to the school and could be a strong candidate for the head coaching position.
External Options
Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck
P.J. Fleck, a proven Big Ten coach, has energized Minnesota and achieved success in a tough conference. He could see UCLA as an opportunity to move to a program with a higher long-term ceiling.
Ohio State co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Brian Hartline
Brian Hartline, a former Ohio State and NFL wide receiver, has become one of the team’s most important assistants. He is charismatic and excels on the recruiting trail. While it may be challenging for him to leave Columbus, Hartline could bring energy to UCLA and help with the transition to the Big Ten.
Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb
Ryan Grubb, known for his playcalling abilities, could upgrade UCLA’s offense. He has experience in California and has recruited the West Coast extensively. Grubb would provide a smooth transition for UCLA’s move to the Big Ten.
Cal coach Justin Wilcox
Justin Wilcox, with his West Coast experience, could continue the defensive foundation established by Lynn. He has reached bowl games in three of the past five seasons at Cal and knows the new Big Ten schools from the West Coast.
UNLV coach Barry Odom
Barry Odom, who has had success at Missouri and UNLV, could bring a dynamic offense to UCLA. He would also help maintain the positive trajectory of the Bruins’ defense.
Baylor coach Dave Aranda
Dave Aranda, despite his recent struggles at Baylor, could be the perfect coach to elevate UCLA during its transition to the Big Ten. He has a connection to the UCLA area and would bring Big Ten knowledge from his time as Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator.
Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White
Tony White, a UCLA alum, has established himself as a coordinator away from Westwood. He has charisma and coast-to-coast experience, making him a strong candidate to return to UCLA as head coach.
