Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Hospitalized for Bladder Issue
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was transported to the hospital on Sunday for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue, according to a statement from the Pentagon. As a result, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks has assumed his duties. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House, and Congress have been informed of the situation. Austin remains hospitalized as of Sunday evening.
Previous Health Concerns
This recent hospitalization comes after Austin’s diagnosis of prostate cancer in December. He was hospitalized on December 22 for a related procedure and transferred his authority to Hicks the following day. However, President Biden and Hicks were unaware of Austin’s hospitalization at the time. Austin was hospitalized again on January 1 due to complications from the initial procedure. President Biden only learned of the situation on January 4.
Apology and Responsibility
Members of Congress criticized Austin for not disclosing his diagnosis and treatment to the president and lawmakers. In response, Austin held a press conference earlier this month, taking full responsibility for his actions and expressing regret for not informing President Biden and the American public. He acknowledged that he should have handled the situation differently.
Current Hospitalization
Austin’s security detail took him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Sunday afternoon. In a joint statement, Dr. John Maddox and Dr. Gregory Chesnut stated that Austin had been admitted to the critical care unit. The duration of his hospital stay is uncertain. However, the doctors reassured that the current bladder issue is not expected to hinder his anticipated full recovery. They also emphasized that his cancer prognosis remains excellent.
