Super Tuesday: Crucial Day in 2024 Primary Election Cycle
A woman drops her ballot into a ballot box at the Los Angeles County Registrar in Norwalk, Calif. Voters in 16 states and one territory will make their voices heard Tuesday in the biggest primary election day of the 2024 cycle, known as Super Tuesday. This significant primary contest day will assign over a third of delegates to determine the Republican presidential nominee.
Haley’s Last Chance to Slow Trump’s Nomination
Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley’s campaign launched a national ad buy to win over voters. Despite Trump’s lead in delegate count and votes, Haley is securing a third of voters, posing a potential concern for Trump in a general election rematch with President Biden on Nov. 5.
Remaining Primary Season
Super Tuesday marks the tallying of votes from the most states at once in the presidential primary. The states holding primary elections on March 5 include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.
Counting Ballots and Determining Winners
Due to voting across six time zones, determining winners and delegate counts may take hours or days. In California, mail-in ballots must be postmarked by March 5 and received by March 12, affecting the final vote tally. Polls will start closing at 7 p.m. ET in Virginia and Vermont.
Final Decisions Beyond Presidential Race
While the focus is on the presidential race, voters will also decide on Senate, House, and governors races that can impact political control. Candidates who have dropped out may still appear on the ballot in some places due to state rules.
