Oscar Pistorius, a South African Paralympian, is set to be released on parole in January after serving half of his 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fiber prosthetics, shot Steenkamp four times through his bathroom door on Valentine's Day 2013. Initially convicted of culpable homicide, the charge was later overturned for a higher charge of murder. Pistorius made a parole bid in March but was denied until a court ruled that he had completed the minimum detention period. The parole board assessed Pistorius's overall condition and took into account a victim's impact statement from June Steenkamp, Reeva's mother. Pistorius's parole will come with conditions, including attending an anger management course and not leaving the region of Pretoria without permission. The victim's mother is satisfied with the conditions imposed by the parole board.
