Rudy Giuliani Files for Bankruptcy After Defamation Trial
Former Trump campaign attorney Rudy Giuliani has filed for bankruptcy following a federal judge’s order to pay nearly $150 million to two former Georgia election workers he defamed. In his Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, Giuliani reported millions of dollars in debt from lawsuits, unpaid taxes, and outstanding legal fees.
Defamation Trial Fallout
The defamation trial between Giuliani and the two former election workers, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and Ruby Freeman, has concluded with the jury awarding $148 million in damages. However, a judge later lowered the amount to $146 million. Giuliani accused Moss and Freeman of involvement in election fraud, which they vehemently denied.
Bankruptcy Declaration and Financial Situation
In his bankruptcy declaration, Giuliani stated that his primary form of debt is from lawsuits, with liabilities ranging from $100,000,001 to $500 million. He reported assets worth between $1,000,001 and $10 million. Additionally, Giuliani disclosed owing nearly a million dollars in taxes for 2021 and 2022, with significant amounts owed to the IRS and the state of New York. He also reported outstanding legal fees of almost $400,000.
Continued Legal Troubles and Lawsuit
Despite the conclusion of the defamation trial, Moss and Freeman have filed another lawsuit against Giuliani, seeking a permanent ban on him speaking about them. They argue that he may attempt to conceal his assets during the 30-day period typically given for payment of damages. The women’s lawyers claim that Giuliani has been uncooperative and noncompliant with court orders in the past.
Defamation Claims and Emotional Distress
Moss and Freeman allege that Giuliani’s continued statements about them, even after being found guilty of defamation, constitute targeted defamation and harassment. They state that his claims have resulted in death threats, racist voicemails, and FBI warnings about their safety. In their latest lawsuit, the women are suing Giuliani for intentional infliction of emotional distress.
It is clear that Giuliani’s legal troubles are far from over, and the fallout from the defamation trial continues to haunt him. The bankruptcy filing further highlights his financial difficulties, as he grapples with the consequences of his actions.
