Steelers teetering on playoff precipice due to players recruited from 'the comforts of home'

Steelers’ “Couch” Players Make Big Impact in Playoff Push

BALTIMORE — After a rain-soaked victory against the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin shouted three words repeatedly: “Off the couch.” Inside linebacker Myles Jack and safety Eric Rowe, both elevated from the practice squad, played a crucial role in the Steelers’ playoff push. The team, once with a 4% chance of making the postseason, now stands on the cusp of a playoff berth. In their final regular-season game, the Steelers defeated the Ravens 17-10, thanks in part to the contributions of Jack and Rowe.

Key Plays from the “Couch” Guys

In the second quarter, Mark Robinson forced a fumble, with Jack assisting in the tackle. Later in the game, Rowe punched the ball out of Gus Edwards’ grasp, leading to a game-sealing field goal. Tomlin praised the efforts of both players, highlighting their significance over the past three weeks. Jack and Rowe have solidified the team in positions where they were lacking manpower.

From the Couch to the Field

Just two months ago, Jack and Rowe were at home, waiting for their next opportunity. However, injuries and suspensions led to their call-up by the Steelers in late November. Since then, they have made an instant impact on the field. Rowe, 31, has shown his skills with 29 combined tackles, one interception, and a forced fumble in three starts. Jack, 28, has contributed 17 combined tackles, one sack, two quarterback hits, and a tackle for loss in three appearances.

Adding Depth to the Defense

The Steelers have faced numerous injuries and absences in their defense this season. Jack and Rowe are just two of the additions made to address these challenges. The team has also signed inside linebackers Blake Martinez and Mykal Walker. Despite being technically part of the practice squad, Rowe and Jack have proven their value and have become integral parts of the team.

Looking Ahead to the Playoffs

If the Steelers make the playoffs, they will have to make tough decisions regarding Rowe and Jack. With three elevations this season, the duo must be signed to the active roster to play in the postseason. Additionally, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who has been inactive recently, is eager to return. The team will also have Damontae Kazee back from suspension. The Steelers will need all hands on deck as they continue their improbable playoff push.

Rowe addressed the defense before their game against the Ravens, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity and his desire to add value to the team. With their contributions, Rowe and Jack have proven themselves as valuable assets to the Steelers’ playoff aspirations. “Any team I’m on, the whole goal is just to add value to the team,” Rowe said. “For me to do that, man, it means a lot.”
